Cart abandonment vs checkout abandonment: Do you know the difference?

It’s frustrating when would-be shoppers leave your site without finishing checkout. While you can’t run after them to rescue the sale, you can send them follow-up emails…if you manage to capture their email.

An eCommerce conversion funnel, depicting the difference between cart abandonment and checkout abandonment.

Before we go into the “how”, it’s essential to get clear on an often-misused term. If you look at an ecommerce conversion funnel, you have various potential drop-off points. First, you have a bounce, where a visitor doesn’t move past their landing page. If they browse a few pages and leave, that’s “browse abandonment”.

If a visitor adds an item to their cart, but they leave before making it to the checkout page, that’s “cart abandonment”. Once they’ve made it to the checkout page, any exit from that point is “checkout abandonment”.

The problem: cart abandonment is often used synonymously with checkout abandonment. And many “cart abandonment” solutions are actually just checkout abandonment solutions. It’s much more involved to capture the email of someone before they start to check out…

However, if you can trigger cart recovery emails when a visitor actually abandons their cart, you have the potential to recover a lot more sales.

How Digioh captures emails for cart abandonment campaigns

Digioh specializes in helping e-commerce sites increase conversions with customizable forms, on-site personalization, and cart abandonment features.

We’re a true “cart abandonment solution” as we can capture the emails of abandoning shoppers even before they reach checkout.

Here are some of the ways Digioh can capture emails of abandoning shoppers:

  • If a visitor is a returning visitor and they’re logged in: we can retrieve their email from their user account, and trigger a cart recovery email (we can even trigger browse abandonment emails).
  • If a shopper is a returning visitor and they’re not logged in, we can still retrieve their email address from a cookie/local storage.
  • If a shopper is a first-time visitor/anonymous, there are a few strategies we can use:
    • Exit intent pop-up with a special gift or coupon offer
    • Javascript event listeners that will “listen” for an email being entered into the first step of checkout, even if the user just hits the tab key and exits
    • Other forms on your site (for example: a product preference quiz)
    • Email merge tag parameters: if the visitor arrived via your email newsletter, you can append their email address to the URL they click on (e.g.[EMAIL], and Digioh can capture that email address). We can even encrypt the email address

A few more important considerations for a cart/checkout abandonment tool

In addition to ensuring that your cart abandonment solution is actually offering cart abandonment features, there are a few more considerations to keep in mind.

  1. Does it integrate with your marketing stack (especially your email marketing provider). Even if it does integrate, how flexible and customizable is the integration? Are you able to collect custom field data and pass it directly to your ESP?
  2. Can you control the timing of the cart recovery emails, so that there’s a delay (for example, 1 hour)  to allow shoppers the chance to come back and finish shopping?
  3. Does your solution offer a one-click-cart-rebuild feature?
  4. Does your solution offer mobile cart and checkout abandonment?
  5. And important: if you’re in the EU, does your solution have GDPR-compliant settings?

Digioh has 400+ built-in integrations, plus we’ll build completely custom back-end integrations for any of our clients. We specialize in integrations, so whatever set-up you have, we’re happy to help you.

We also give you full control over your cart abandonment campaigns including:

  • Timing: control exactly when your cart recovery emails are sent (often, we recommend one hour as a good interval)
  • GDPR-compliant cart abandonment settings
  • Mobile checkout and cart abandonment
  • One-click cart rebuild feature

With all these strategies in place, Digioh’s clients see 10% increase in revenue, on average.

Wix + Digioh Super Wix & Lightbox SidekickEvery superhero needs a sidekick.  We know that Wix is a super website builder, helping over 43 million users build sites that really kick tush, but where is the helpful sidekick? Citizens, look no further! We’re here to reveal our new Lightbox app for Wix- a perfect sidekick that will help your website capture up to 500% more email subscribers and it’s free to use- and yes, we did just say 500% and free!

Lightbox is a simple, but elegant “soft” pop-up that gently asks your Wix website visitors to sign up to your mailing list.  It appears on the screen after a few seconds (the timing is determined by you) and the rest of the website gets “turned down” so the focus is directly on the Lightbox.  Designed to be short and direct, it takes your visitors only a second to either sign up or click out, so their browsing is not interrupted.  And, when someone signs up, Lightbox uses its super strength to add them into your Wix Contacts list. Digioh Lightbox on Wix

Lightbox, great sidekick that it is, supports your design needs.  It automatically adapts to your website’s theme and you can customize all of the text to bring your best call-to-action forward.  You can also adjust when and where it appears. Lightbox Customizable Settings

Lightbox isn’t the “work-alone” type either.  Sometimes you need some super friends to help you get things done.  Lightbox for Wix currently integrates with Constant Contact, with many more email marketing platforms coming soon.  So in addition to your new subscribers being added to your Wix Contacts list, they’ll also be added to your lists in your preferred email marketing platform as well.

Adding Lightbox to your site is easy- just navigate to the App Market and search for Lightbox.  Then add it to your site.Search for Lightbox

So, if you still aren’t convinced that Lightbox will make a great addition to your Wix team, try seeing it in action or, since it’s free to use, give it a go yourself!

Do you use Constant Contact?  Check out our step-by-step guide on setting up an integrated Lightbox for your Wix site.
